Like any good rasta, Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley is a lover of nature. And because of that the musician is honored in participating in the SWU Music & Arts Festival 2011 where he’ll be playing on the 12th of November. “It’s a really valid festival”, he sais regarding the sustainable motto that SWU carries. Still not sure about the set list, Damian hesitated, but revealed to Portal SWU that along his own songs, he’ll be playing songs by his father, Bob Marley.
What are you expecting of the SWU gig?
We don’t know exactly what songs we’ll be playing because we started rehearsing now. Obviously, I’ll try to play my own songs.
Any songs by Bob Marley?
Yes! I will also be playing songs by my father. Over all, I want to give you all a little taste of what I’ve been planning the last 10 years.
Is it a heavy burden to carry the name Marley? Is there some responsibility involved?
I was born with this name, so I don’t know any other life. For me it’s normal. If you were someone who didn’t have the name and for some reason acquired it, it might be weird. But that’s what I do, it isn’t heavy at all.
Have comparisons with your father bothered you much?
Not really. I don’t hear many comparisons because our styles are really different. Atleast not as much as my brothers, who have much similar styles. But either I way, I’m not bothered by it since I’m being compared to the best. Bob Marley was an ambassador of reggae music.
Are you a fan of any of the bands who’ll be playing at the same day as you?
I know Michael Franti because of some tours with Ziggy, a few years back. But I don’t know the other musicians.
You’re most recent album, Distant Relatives, was a collective work with the rapper Nas. How was this partnership?
It was amazing. I’m a big fan of his and that was one of the main reasons we decided to make this project together. We’re fans of each others music. And like a fan, it’s impressive to be in studio with one of your favorite artists. And we also became really good friends, which was the best thing in the process.
Quando sai um novo álbum só seu, já que o último foi em 2005?
When is your new album being released, since your last was released in 2005?
I’m releasing new material this second. We’ve released a single in iTunes and we’re planning on releasing a few more. Through out the new couple of months we will be releasing 2 or 3 more singles with a dance hall touch to it. And I also intent on releasing a solo album next year.
Are you a defender of natural causes?
As a rasta, my life style is closely related to nature, doing things the natural way and respecting the earth. And it’s a life style that’s been there since the 50s. So our concern with nature isn’t something recent.
